Is this the first fashion photography ? It seems so ! According to Wikipedia, fashion photography can be defined as a genre of photography devoted to displaying clothing and other fashion items. And it is precisely the case on this photo showing Virginia Oldoini in the traditional clothes of Napoleon III's court.
However, it is not fashion photography as we conceive it today. This photo could not appear in a magazine or in a newspaper because of the technique of the time...

Were there even magazines talking about fashion at that time? I imagine if so, there must have been line drawings and simple pattern designs to describe them. The pictures you've selected are lovely.
